While the upper Haight has more historical color, the density of aggressive homeless people as you get closer to Golden Gate Park often keeps me on the East side of Divisadero. Definitely one of the underrated areas to live in the city. Only issue is freeway access. Lived here for a year when I first moved to the city. It's a 10 minute walk into the Financial District, so very convenient if you work downtown and don't have a car. Grant and Green is a scene on weekends with plenty of cool bars and restaurants, but Kearny is up the hill enough that it's quiet at night. Lived here for 2 years and loved it. Less than 2 blocks to just about everything you need - Crunch Fitness, couple coffee shops, great restaurants, convenient to AMC Van Ness movie theater, and close to a couple nice parks.

Highly recommend. Close to Chrissy Field and the Presidio. Tons of good places to eat and drink on Chestnut. Great central location if working downtown. It's a bit of a trek to the Mission, but how many pairs of skinny jeans and plaid shirts can one person own?

The neighborhood is quiet and residential, which is great if that's what you're looking for. And it's called Russian Hill for a reason -- tough to walk anywhere without facing a rather steep incline, but makes for great views and we could all use the workout anyways, right?
