West seattle barnes and noble
Thanks to the couple of people who actually expressed concern about the human part of this closing. As a former BN employee, I can tell you that all of those employees will be out of a job. They may make some small effort to find the managers another spot, but even that is iffy. Goddess Andraste — I appreciate your concern for the employees who are losing their jobs, and I do feel bad for them, but I have read a lot of good ideas put forth here for making West Wood Village not just viable, but possibly thriving, and that translates into more available jobs.
So keep the ideas coming folks, and hopefully the retailers and developers will listen. Available jobs in the next 3 months? People got bills to pay and mouths to feed now. Years ago there was a proposal for a movie theatre in the empty space west of the post office. That would have been an asset to the mall in my opinion but it was dropped due to neighbors fear of unruly patrons, drinking, etc. Maybe it could be considered again? Duh — Totally agree, and not only would a new movie theater fail at Westwood, it would probably kill off the Admiral Theater.
There is not a big enough market for more than one movie theater in West Seattle. The Landing is really car centric, with housing relegated to the far corner of the development. I think WWV can do much better than that. Shopping below an apartment structure.
I will truly miss you…I have shopped at your store many times…brought my grandchildren for story time on Saturday mornings and always have been welcomed warmly and openly!
Could the ever increasing property taxes possibly be playing a role in raising lease rates at Westwood Village? When urban villages were proposed back in the 90s, the idea was that people could live and work in the same place.
New development would feature commercial space at the street level, there would be housing above the businesses, and everyone would walk to work. This sounded great because traffic was already an issue in Seattle. What happened, though, was that the commercial spaces were filled with retail and food service businesses — which provide low wage jobs. Many of the people who DO live in the urban village apartments are commuting somewhere outside of West Seattle to higher paying jobs so they can afford the rents.
And this has compounded the traffic problem. A lot of their employees live here and commute downtown or to Redmond every day. The problem is that for that to make any difference, each company would need office space for a couple hundred employees and none of the commercial space we have is big enough.
However, if Westwood could be re-imagined to provide space for anchors like big tech companies, instead of retailers, there could be significant benefits. Fewer people would be on the WS bridge every morning commuting to work. It would be more convenient for employees because from their offices, tech workers could walk to QFC, Target, the post office, and the bank. That means fewer car trips. Other businesses would benefit, too. Traffic Cams Weather Community Forums. WSB October 14, pm.

Pretty sure they meant monthly. Are you kidding? I call it the Soviet of Target because of the empty shelves. They are not up to managing a larger store. Sad to see them leave. Be surprisd if they expanded into that huge space.
Lots of issues with people gathering signatures it does still happen , people begging for money and shop lifters. People gathering signatures is democracy in action. I volunteered to collect signatures for the first time in my life in support of Initiative to repeal the ban on affirmative action because I was shocked to learn that Washington is one of only 8 states with such a ban.
I am happy to report that the initiative gathered way more signatures than necessary and the petition was carried to the legislature last Friday.
When I see people gathering signatures, I approach them for a few seconds to find out what it is about. This lack of engagement in the way the laws of our state are formed is not good for our democracy, in my opinion.
That is so great to hear, Kathy! Thanks for helping to gather signatures. Yeah, Target needs an overhaul! Maybe a bigger QFC?! So many happy memories of having coffee there with my mom, and looking at books with my son. I wondered if it was closing due to poor sales but talked to the manager and he said this store was one of the top performing stores in the nation!
Unfortunately, the landlords raised the rent so that it was on a par with downtown Seattle. I would like to know why the Westwood Village landlords have put the rent up so high that it has forced out national chains.
Could the WSB find out? What is their rationale behind this and what future do they see for Westwood Village? I wonder if they are preparing to sell Westwood village. Sometimes real estate investments are more appealing with vacancies because it allows buyers to reinvent the space. That was the case with Pier1, and others. If they are looking at property values on the peninsula, they may be skewing the wrong direction with what they think they can charge. A lot of patrons come from the East or South parts of the area, which is decidedly different than those with Beach Drive addresses.
Are these decisions being made offshore? Do some digging. It is time for West Seattle to have her own hospital. Does not need to be huge.. No more going across the bridge. West Seattle did have its own hospital once upon a time in the Alaska Junction. I think the so-called emergency clinics have taken the place of full-fledged hospitals. But the chain, let's be honest, is in decline. Even after I left, I watched closely as Borders mismanaged itself into obsolescence.
You can only tread water for so long before your limbs don't work anymore. Independent bookstores proved to be more nimble, more hyperlocal, more customer-focused than a chain ever could be. And now, after three decades of indies suffering at the hands of big-box chain bookstores, the roles have reversed. But I don't know any booksellers who are cheering.
If the chain were to disappear, many communities around the country would no longer have a physical bookstore within an hour's drive. That's in nobody's best interest. If you had told me twenty years ago that I would one day be lamenting the death of a corporate bookstore outpost, I probably would have thought you were insane.
You would have to be made of stone to not feel some kind of heartbreak.
